VNY Tenants and Administration Facility Achieve Green Business Program Certification

May 21, 2024

Van Nuys Airport Press Release:

Six businesses at Van Nuys Airport (VNY) and one facility at the airport owned and operated by Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA) have achieved certification through the Los Angeles Green Business Program, marking a significant step forward in the aviation industry's journey toward carbon neutrality. This accomplishment demonstrates the shared commitment of VNY and its tenants to create a more sustainable future.

The certified businesses at VNY include Aeroplex/Aerolease Group, Castle & Cooke Aviation, Clay Lacy Aviation, Helinet Aviation, Jet Aviation and Signature Flight Support. LAWA's Airport Administration Building also earned certification.

Certified businesses in the Green Business Program receive free consulting on how to successfully implement environmental standards established by the California Green Business Network. These standards help businesses reduce their environmental impact, from reducing water and energy consumption to adopting environmentally friendly products and waste reduction practices.

"Airports worldwide are engaging in initiatives to transform the aviation industry, and Van Nuys Airport is proud to lead the way," said Doug Webster, Interim Chief Operations and Maintenance Officer at Los Angeles World Airports. "This milestone achievement demonstrates our tenants' dedication to addressing the climate crisis while continuing to provide vital economic benefits and life-saving services to our community."

Through certification, VNY tenants and LAWA join a network of more than 4,000 certified California Green Businesses that are working toward achieving major environmental outcomes. These include mitigating more than 400,000 metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions, diverting 100,000 metric tons of waste from landfills, and safely eliminating more than 20,000 gallons of hazardous waste. Additionally, the network has collectively saved more than $18 million in utility bills through effective water and energy conservation measures.

The Los Angeles Green Business Program is one of many initiatives advanced by VNY in support of LAWA's Sustainability Action Plan. In alignment with the City of Los Angeles' vision for a sustainable city, the plan outlines ambitious goals, including 100% carbon neutrality in airport operations by 2045.

Additionally, VNY is one of the only general aviation airports in the world to earn Level 3 Airport Carbon Accreditation from Airports Council International. It has distinguished itself as an early adopter of sustainable aviation and unleaded aviation fuels, and is an industry leader in solar energy generation. Airport businesses also support zero-waste and stormwater mitigation programs and are transitioning to electric-powered ground support equipment.

"The Green Business Program reflects Van Nuys Airport's commitment to reducing its carbon footprint across diverse operations," added Webster. "We attribute our success to working in close partnership with airport businesses, who are propelling sustainability strategies forward and setting the standard for the entire general aviation industry."
